Concrete examples of coaching topics to clarify how it can help with professional and personal growth.
A client came to coaching having doubts that their direct reports didn’t like them as their leader. The client had questions about their role as a leader and their own use for the team. They had negative thoughts and doubts about their capability to help their team members and lead them.
They thought:
They’re just being polite with me.”
“I’m too soft and that’s why they’re distant.”
“What value do I even bring to this team?”
They felt insecure about their likability.
They felt occasional relief when someone was warm toward them, followed by “but was that genuine?”
The client avoided difficult conversations for fear of creating conflict and overanalysed messages and discussions with their colleagues, interpreting neutral behaviour as evidence of dislike.
Throughout the coaching process, I helped the client identify the negative thinking pattern and understand that their interpretations didn’t mean they were the truth.
They started asking their team the right questions to understand them and not to sound judgemental.
They stopped thinking on their colleagues’ behalf and started testing their assumptions.
By being curious about each team member, by telling and showing their colleagues they care about them, the client found out that the team also cares about them.
As a result, they can give autonomy to their team members and can help them develop in new ways.
