Just work on your mindset and everything will change.
I could sit here and tell you that mindset is the most important thing when it comes to making career changes as a high achiever.
Don’t get me wrong, your attitude, your way of thinking, your specific convictions, how you feel about change are very important.
That’s a very big part of why I coach people on their mindsets and help them get rid of perfectionism and rigid thinking when making significant career changes.
However, that’s not the whole picture.
There are other important things too, practical things.
From working with dozens of clients and navigating my own career changes, I’ve seen that successful transitions are a mix of mental readiness and practical steps.
Let me break it down for you:
- Knowing your options, or identifying them if you don’t know them yet. You need to know where you’re going in order to move forward. Whether it’s exploring new industries, pivoting roles, or starting something of your own, getting clarity on your viable options is an important step.
- Decision making. Once you have options, you need a process to evaluate them. Otherwise, you’ll stay stuck in analysis paralysis. Good decisions come from combining logic, values and risk awareness.
- LinkedIn and CV update. Your CV and LinkedIn need to tell a clear, compelling story about who you are and where you’re going. That means positioning yourself for the next chapter, not rehashing the last one.
- Networking and building relationships with people. The best opportunities can come through people, not job boards. Thoughtful conversations can open unexpected doors and also give you valuable insider info before making a leap.
- Preparing for that next role. Whether you’re joining a new company or building your own business, preparation is key. That means getting your finances in check, researching your future team, company, or clients, preparing yourself for that win.
These are some of the steps I work through with my clients in my programs.
