I work with high achievers who are overthinking, who lack confidence, who are feeling worried, demotivated and frustrated in their current career and want a change.
Together we explore how they self-sabotage through: perfectionism, low self-confidence, self-doubt, need for control, tendency to please others, constantly doing and thinking about what they need to do.
We come up with tailored actions for: more visibility in their career, improved performance, speaking up, getting a promotion or a new role, better
Part of the high achievers I work with are those who worry about being laid off and want to calm their anxiety and continue to perform.
However, they fear being laid off and not being able to find a satisfactory job in another company. They worry about loss of financial stability and feel helpless, their self-worth and confidence taking a hit.
If you resonate or identify with this high achiever, read on, ‘cause I have some ideas for you about how to calm your anxiety, continue to perform, or prepare for your next move.
Let’s start from the top…of your head!
What if your mindset worked consciously in your favour, so that you actually feel calm and optimistic about your career?
You as a high achiever are doing a great job in your team and making a difference within your department. You’re dedicated, diligent and you generally get positive feedback from your manager.
But when you think about being laid off, anxiety goes from 0 to 100 and the stress associated with job loss and the uncertainty of the future is hard to deal with. You’re concerned about how employment gaps might be viewed by future employers. You fear being perceived as a failure by peers, friends, and family, despite your high performance and you worry about maintaining your lifestyle and meeting financial obligations without a steady income.
If only you would be able to calm your anxious thoughts and think more clearly, it would be ok.
It’s natural to stress about a potential lay off. Especially when it’s not the first one in your company and you’ve seen other colleagues go. Having someone to talk to about your fears, worries can help you overcome them. I can help you reframe your thinking and find healthy coping strategies for these anxious states.
One thing that can help is to plan your finances. Build an emergency fund that can cover 6 months of living expenses. If you already have savings aside, consider creating a deposit specifically for this purpose.
This financial cushion can alleviate some of the stress and give you time to find the right job opportunity if you’re laid off.
Another thing that can help is talking about these intrusive thoughts, about your stress and emotional state. I can help you with all of this, so you feel calmer, more prepared and able to continue to perform. I can help you understand and manage your emotions better, reframe negative thoughts and cultivate a more proactive mindset. This includes focusing on opportunities rather than obstacles. I can help you break down your goals into actionable steps, making them more manageable and less overwhelming.
You will be able to navigate your career path with newfound resources to deal with uncertainty.
If it were just you having these thoughts and worries, then it might be a sign that something is uniquely wrong. But the truth is, you’re not alone. Many high achievers in the tech industry experience similar fears and anxieties. I’ve been through that myself in one of my previous roles.
It’s completely normal to feel this way given the quickly changing nature of the field.
Having someone to talk to and let off steam will not only help calm your doubts and fears, it will also help you succeed faster than you could alone.
So start by planning your finances and that emergency fund.
I know you’re thinking about how to calm yourself down, how to manage the stress of uncertainty. However, there are things you can do to get rid of these problems. You can start by looking at your current financial situation, building that 6 month fund for peace of mind.
