Concrete examples of coaching topics to clarify how it can help with professional and personal growth.
A client came to coaching with constant self-doubt about their work, their professional value. They were worried someone was about to find out they are a fraud.
The client saw themselves as an imposter at work, comparing themselves with others and having the impression others know more and are better than them.
The thoughts were relentless: “Everyone else just seems to get it faster than me. They’re more experienced, more confident.”
They’d sit in meetings listening to other colleagues, convinced they were the only one winging it and thinking “What if they realise I don’t actually belong here?”
So they worked harder and prepared more, said yes when they meant no, because turning something down felt too risky for their job.
Throughout the coaching process, I helped the client see that the thoughts that were building this image of being an impostor are not the absolute truth and the client has significant experience, expertise and proof that they are actually doing a good job.
They reframed the impostor beliefs from thinking they didn’t belong, to thinking they cared deeply about the quality of their work.
As a result, the client gained confidence and realised where they brought value and what abilities and strengths differentiated them. They also switched from rumination towards action.
And as for things they don’t know or own, they now ask for others’ help, in order to complete more complex work.
