What overthinking is and a tool to detach from anxious thoughts

Ever catch yourself spiralling down the “what if” rabbit hole?

Overthinking is the attachment to your thoughts. It fuels anxiety. When you overthink you think too much about something, you analyse it in a way that is more harmful than helpful.

Overthinking can sound like:
“I’m not good enough, I have to do more”.
“What if they reject my idea?”
“Am I really qualified for this role, or am I just fooling everyone?”
“There is so much uncertainty at work. What will happen if I’m laid off?”

But let’s do something a little different. Now, imagine yourself in a relaxing place, holding a balloon.
Imagine writing your intrusive and repetitive thoughts on a piece of paper and attaching it to the balloon.
Then release the balloon and watch it float away into the sky until it disappears.

You write another thought on another piece of paper and tie it to another balloon that you then release and watch how it floats away.
Continue this process with each new thought that arises.
Repeat. Release. Float.

This tool will help you detach from those persisting thoughts.

Test it and let me know how it goes.
