Mindset Coaching for Career Change

Waiting to be sure: how perfectionism keeps high achievers from making a career change

I talk to high achievers who tell me they’ve been thinking about a career change for months, sometimes a year.

What strikes me is how sure they say they need to be before doing anything. Like there’s a decision that comes with a guarantee.

There isn’t. But I get why they look for it anyway. It’s perfectionism wearing a very convincing disguise.

“If it’s not going to be perfect, why do it?”

So you don’t.

You think about it more, research more, find excuses about the market, the economy, stability, you consume mental energy while not making a change.

There’s usually something else going on at the same time.

You’ve spent years building expertise, becoming good at what you do. Starting something new means being bad at it for a while, being a beginner again, and asking questions you “should” already know the answer to.

And on top of all that, you’re trying to figure this out on your own.

So you continue even though the job doesn’t light you up anymore, even though you don’t see the purpose.

This is the kind of thing I work through with high achievers in my MAP 1:1 coaching program.

We work on the assumptions and the fears, the negative self-talk, on what purpose means for you right now, on deciding and acting when there’s no perfect answer.

It’s for you if you’re willing to challenge the assumptions, fears, and negative self-talk that are keeping you from making the change.

It’s for you if you want new behaviours.

Send me a message and let’s start with a free 30 minute conversation about where you are and where you’d like to be.
